May 24, 2008 - MDSA successfully hosted its (and possibly the world's) first workshop for survivors of mother-daughter sexual abuse in Fair Haven, New Jersey. Participants arrived by car, train and plane to participate in this unique experience.
Workshop sessions covered topics such as the effects of mother-daughter sexual abuse, family rules and dysfunction, emotional intelligence, self-perceptions, and building support networks.
Most importantly, the workshop provided the opportunity for survivors of mother-daughter sexual abuse to meet one another in person to share their experiences, and to provide and receive validation and support. The vast majority of survivors of mother-daughter sexual abuse have never spoken to another survivor, let alone met one in person, and the healing benefits of doing so cannot be overemphasized. Participants valued being part of a community in which they were believed and their unique concerns were understood.
MDSA would like to thank the brave women who attended the workshop for their commitment, courage and openness. They were truly pioneers!
Survivors interested in attending a future workshop or a face-to-face support group in New Jersey, are encouraged to contact us for more information.
Those interested in attending a full weekend experience can read more about the annual retreat.
